From Battlefield to Bank: How One Veteran's Mission Is Transforming Financial Literacy for Soldiers
Empowering Soldiers: A Mission to Improve Financial Literacy
In a recent episode of Yahoo Finance's Warrior Money podcast, hosts Patrick Murphy and Dan Kunze sat down with Brendan Duebner, the visionary founder of Life Skills for Soldiers. A Wharton MBA graduate, Duebner's nonprofit organization is dedicated to equipping service members with crucial financial skills for life beyond military service.
Duebner's passion for supporting soldiers began during his time as a platoon leader in the US Army. A transformative experience with a struggling soldier became the catalyst for his mission. "We had a soldier with disciplinary issues," Duebner recalled, "and I discovered these challenges were rooted in financial insecurity."
After implementing a budgeting class, the soldier's entire trajectory changed. "He quickly became one of our best soldiers," Duebner explained. "Not only did his behavior improve, but he also realized we genuinely cared about his success."
Innovative Training Approach
Life Skills for Soldiers has developed a comprehensive training program featuring courses on critical financial topics such as budgeting, credit card selection, and vehicle purchasing. Their unique "train the trainer" model empowers military leaders to educate their own teams, believing that peer-to-peer learning is most effective.
The organization's learning management software serves as the core of their educational platform, enabling trainers to collaborate and support one another. Importantly, entry-level learning modules are provided free of charge to military leaders, demonstrating their commitment to accessible financial education.
Looking Forward
Through pilot programs and independent research, Life Skills for Soldiers continues to refine its approach, with the ultimate goal of supporting thousands of service members in achieving financial stability and personal growth.
Warrior Money, hosted by former Congressman Patrick Murphy and veteran investor Dan Kunze, remains dedicated to empowering military veterans through financial education and inspirational insights.
